Shula’s Steak House
Our visit to Shula’s this time was not as pleasing as our previous visits. Even though we were early for our reservation, we were greeted and seated immediately. Our server TJ was friendly and efficient. Water was provided and we were given ample time to peruse the menu. We both ordered steaks, after all we were in a steak house. Warm bread found its way to our table while we waited for our starters. I ordered the wedge and she ordered lobster bisque. My wedge was almost a complete meal in itself. Their iteration of this classic was very complicated with the obligatory blue cheese crumble, what seemed to be an additional blue cheese dressing and cherry tomatoes halved and dried cranberries as a ganish. There was also a mysterious sweet and tangy red sauce under the lettuce wedges (two wedges are served with this salad). The lobster bisque was rather small with a token amount of lobster meat as a garnish. My companion was surprised at the lack of lobstery flavor. However, the saving grace of the evening was the perfectly cooked New York strip steak, medium rare throughout and lightly seasoned letting the flavor and tenderness speak for itself. My companion didn’t fare so well, her filet was cooked perfectly but it was slightly chewy, not tough but not up to our expectations considering the price. There was also another problem with the evening, the timing of our meal was way off, long waits between courses. I don’t blame the server, I think the problem was with the kitchen staff. We have had several excellent meals and often celebrate special occasions and bring out-of-town guests to Shula’s, I guess anyone can have an off night and we will not hold it against them. This is not meant to be a critical review but maybe an eye opener for management.
